Who will watch the watchmen?

One complaint that I have consistently heard since my early days on the old cusa-talk boards was that the 'local fish wrap' is terrible at covering UC sports. The perception is that if there is a negative story coming out of UC, it will be on the front page the next morning, but if there is a positive story it will contain some back handed editorial remarks about UC in the middle of it tainting an otherwise good story.

Another complaint is that there is very little original journalism being done. Most of the stories are rehashes of what we already know. Do the local writers read the message boards and just edit the posts down into enough words to fit their column?

What is the role of the 'paper of record'? I certainly do not think it should be the lead cheerleader for the UC Athletic Department, but I find it sad when our opponents' papers have more insightful content on our team, and often more articles than our own hometown paper.

This could be part of the overall declining role of newspapers recently, but I can't remember a time in my 11 years of living in Cincinnati when anybody was happy with the coverage. So can we really call that a decline?

Great post. You're absolutely right. We have no loyal, positive media impact from Cincinnati and hopefully that will change but we all know the pecking order of college football in Cincinnati right now. It would be asking Cincinnati to change first. With more and more people rallying around the Bearcats this year- this could be the point where someone steps up and starts reporting and covering UC the way that it should be covered.

So, we can expect a complete, original, upbeat article from you after the Miami game, right? Pictures would be good also.
