Recruiting News

I'm no expert, but here's what I have been able to glean from the world just out of view.

Dominique Brown - seems to be putting a decent season together.

Cincinnati Winton Woods defeated Bishop Watterson 19-13 in
overtime at Hawley Field. Watterson was ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Division III poll, while Winton Woods was ranked No. 8 in Division II.

Winton Woods (3-1) was led by senior running back Jeremiah Goins, who rushed for 161 yards on 21 carries and a 2-yard touchdown in overtime. Senior quarterback Dominique Brown, a University of Cincinnati commit, rushed 26 times for 120 yards and a touchdown.

In the end, Winton Woods' throwback ground game was chiefly responsible for its 19-13 overtime road besting of the Eagles (3-1).

"It was kind of tough," Warriors quarterback Dominique Brown said after the battle royal. "I got the guys up front rolling; we got on the same page.

"We came out kind of flat, then we put up some numbers in the second half and in overtime."

That, Winton Woods (3-1) did. Brown, a 6-foot-2, 203-pound senior who has committed to the University of Cincinnati, was at the crux of the Eagles' heartache. His 135 yards rushing on 25 attempts were both game highs, but more than anything, he controlled the tempo of the contest.

"He's a big-time player," Watterson coach Dan Bjelac said. "He's a lot bigger and stronger than he was last year, and he was a really good player last year.

"He's a strong kid who runs their option well."

Last season, the Eagles toppled Winton Woods 28-13.

This go-round, it was Brown's 9-yard scoring scamper late in the third quarter that locked the affair at 13, and his 11-yard completion to Juan Glover with seconds remaining in the fourth that put the Warriors in position to win.

Tre Boston - noted that he was injured but is back playing. He's listed at CB, but is noted for running in a couple of TDs.

They scratched their way to the 1-yard line, where they faced fourth and goal. Tre' Boston, who returned to action this week after not playing last week, carried and just got into the end zone. It took the referees some time to actually signal that he had broken the plane of the goal line.

Demitri Beal - took part in a record breaking contest earlier this season

Demetri Beal got it started with two quick scores and the Chaminade defense dominated the field of play as the host Lions tied for the largest margin of victory in Broward County history, Saturday afternoon in Hollywood.

Brad Harrah - being recruited as a Defensive tackle, but is apparently catching passes for Pleasant HS in Marion.

Josh Russ - getting recognition

On defense, had a tackle, one assist, one pass breakup and one blocked field goal.

Who will watch the watchmen?

One complaint that I have consistently heard since my early days on the old cusa-talk boards was that the 'local fish wrap' is terrible at covering UC sports. The perception is that if there is a negative story coming out of UC, it will be on the front page the next morning, but if there is a positive story it will contain some back handed editorial remarks about UC in the middle of it tainting an otherwise good story.

Another complaint is that there is very little original journalism being done. Most of the stories are rehashes of what we already know. Do the local writers read the message boards and just edit the posts down into enough words to fit their column?

What is the role of the 'paper of record'? I certainly do not think it should be the lead cheerleader for the UC Athletic Department, but I find it sad when our opponents' papers have more insightful content on our team, and often more articles than our own hometown paper.

This could be part of the overall declining role of newspapers recently, but I can't remember a time in my 11 years of living in Cincinnati when anybody was happy with the coverage. So can we really call that a decline?

Where are all the bloggers?

Seeing this article today prompted me to ask the good people of Bearcat Banter where all the Bearcat Bloggers are.

Yeah why aren't there any bloggers? So I started this up, will is stay here? I don't know, but if you are interested in joining this blog, I'd be more than happy to have anyone who has an opinion on the Bearcats to join up.
